Research Postdoctoral Fellowship in Robotic, Minimally Invasive & Bariatric Surgery

The Baptist Health Miami Minimally Invasive & Bariatric Surgery Fellowship offers a highly competitive paid, one-year Research Postdoctoral Fellowship for physicians seeking advanced academic experience in robotic, minimally invasive, bariatric, and general surgery.

Designed for U.S. and international medical graduates with prior surgical training or residency experience, this fellowship provides intensive mentorship in clinical research, scientific writing, and academic surgery while exposing fellows to a high-volume, nationally recognized robotic surgery program.

Under the mentorship of Dr. Anthony Gonzalez, fellows become integral members of an active research team dedicated to advancing the fields of robotic, minimally invasive, bariatric, and general surgery through innovation, clinical investigation, and scholarly collaboration.

Fellowship Highlights

    • Research fellows participate in every phase of the research process, including:

  • Developing original research questions and study protocols
  • Database design, data collection, and statistical analysis
  • Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions and regulatory compliance
  • Scientific writing, manuscript preparation, and publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Abstract submission to local, regional, national, and international scientific meetings
  • Oral and poster presentations at professional conferences
  • Creation and editing of educational and operative surgical videos
  • Collaboration with faculty, clinical fellows, residents, medical students, and research coordinators

Clinical Exposure

    • While the primary focus is academic research, fellows gain valuable clinical exposure by observing a broad spectrum of advanced robotic, minimally invasive, foregut, hernia, bariatric, and general surgical procedures performed across the fellowship’s participating hospitals.

Since the fellows frequently are participants in the daily care of patients by observing office/ clinic patient evaluations, and hospital rounds; this unique environment provides insight into complex surgical decision-making, perioperative management, multidisciplinary patient care, and the integration of cutting-edge robotic technology into modern surgical practice.

Academic Experience

    • Research fellows actively participate in the educational activities of the fellowship, including:

  • Weekly research meetings with Dr. Anthony Gonzalez and the research team
  • Core educational conferences
  • Monthly Journal Club
  • Multidisciplinary case conferences

  • Are motivated, collaborative, and committed to academic excellence

Mentorship & Career Development

The mission of this fellowship extends beyond research productivity. Fellows receive individualized mentorship in scientific writing, presentation skills, academic career development, and professional growth.

Throughout the fellowship, Dr. Gonzalez works closely with each fellow to help maximize academic productivity, strengthen residency or fellowship applications, and develop the skills necessary for a successful career in surgery.

Our previous research fellows have consistently achieved outstanding career outcomes. When eligible and pursuing residency training in the United States, fellows have successfully matched into General Surgery residency programs, including both categorical and preliminary positions. Others have advanced to surgical fellowship training, academic appointments, or leadership roles within their home institutions.

Although individual outcomes depend on each applicant’s qualifications and career goals, our commitment is to provide every fellow with exceptional mentorship, meaningful research opportunities, and the guidance needed to reach their professional aspirations.
