What is a Fellowship?
A fellowship is advanced training that a doctor or surgeon completes after finishing medical school, or residency, or becoming fully trained in surgery.
During a fellowship, a doctor chooses to focus on a specific area of surgery to gain deeper experience and expertise.
A Fellowship allows doctors & surgeons to:
- Learn advanced techniques
- Treat more complex cases
- Receive specialized, hands-on training
- Work closely with experts in a specific field
This extra training helps surgeons provide higher-level care in their chosen specialty.
How long is a Fellowship?
Most surgical fellowships last 1–2 years, depending on the specialty.
– Surgical Fellowship through the Fellowship Council
- Focus: Clinical training and patient care
- Purpose: Surgeons learn advanced techniques and gain expertise in a specific area of surgery.
- Activities: Performing surgeries, managing patients, and learning specialized procedures (e.g., robotic surgery, bariatric surgery, colorectal surgery).
- Outcome: Surgeon gains hands-on experience to treat complex conditions safely and effectively.
– Research Fellowship with Dr Anthony Gonzalez at Baptist Health South Florida
- Focus: Scientific or medical research
- Purpose: Doctors or medical scientists focus on studying disease, testing treatments, or advancing medical knowledge.
- Activities: Laboratory work, clinical research, data analysis, publishing papers, and sometimes teaching.
- Outcome: Doctor or scientist gains research expertise and may help develop new treatments, techniques, or medical discoveries.
Key Difference
- Surgical fellowship: Hands-on patient care and advanced surgical skills.
- Research fellowship: Focused on studying medicine and creating new knowledge rather than direct patient care.
What this means for patients?
When a surgeon has completed a fellowship, it means they have:
- Advanced training beyond standard surgical education
- Focused expertise in specific procedures
- Experience managing complex cases
While all board-certified surgeons are highly trained, fellowship training reflects an additional level of specialization.
A surgical fellowship is extra, specialized training that helps a surgeon become an expert in a specific type of surgery — giving patients added confidence in their care.
